Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth extractions can vary in complexity. At Elegance Dental located in Southington, CT, we perform simple and complex tooth extractions and pledge to our patients that their safety is our priority.
Who should have their wisdom teeth extracted?
The extraction of your wisdom teeth is necessary when they grow sideways or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone, impacted or stuck in the jaw. When this happens, you may experience some swelling, stiffness and pain. Another problem that can occur is a tumor forming around the impacted tooth, resulting in the destruction of healthy teeth. Removal of the impacted teeth can prevent or solve these problems.
Oral Examination
At Elegance Dental, the doctor will perform an oral examination and take X-rays of your mouth to evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth. Studies have shown that early evaluation and treatment result in a superior outcome for the patient. It is highly recommended that patients in the mid-teenage years be evaluated by our dentist to avoid any complications in the future.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
At Elegance Dental, depending on your preference and medical history, the extraction can be done under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. These options, along with any risks associated with surgery, will be discussed with you before your scheduled procedure. Once the teeth are extracted, the dentist will suture the gum. The doctor will place gauze on the area and request you bite down to help control bleeding. You will be asked to remain in the office, under close supervision, before you can go home. Before you leave, our staff will provide you with instructions, prescriptions for pain medication, antibiotics if necessary and a follow-up appointment.
