Halitosis Treatment
Suffering from bad breath that just won’t go away no matter what you try? At Elegance Dental located in Southington, CT, we understand how difficult it is to live with severe halitosis.
What is Halitosis?
Okay, so you’ve noticed that you continually have a dry mouth or that your breath isn’t as fresh as it should be. You also know there’s a significant difference between the occasional bad breath that some experience and chronic bad breath; however, recently you find that your breath is more than just the remains of lunch or dinner, but that it smells bad all the time. You might be suffering from Halitosis, which can be a result of gum disease or tooth decay.
What Causes Halitosis?
Bacteria and plaque are common causes of bad breath. Plaque and tartar can attract bacteria and accumulate on the teeth and gum line. Food and bacteria release an unpleasant odor, which can cause dental decay and gum disease. At Elegance Dental, we understand many other factors can cause Halitosis. Saliva also plays an important role in your dental health, because its function is to wash away any bacteria and plaque in your mouth. If you suffer from a dry mouth, plaque and bacteria can still linger, even if you brush and floss regularly. Even some medications are known to cause dry mouth. Whatever the underlying reasons may be, at Elegance Dental we are skilled in how to treat this condition.
Treatment of Halitosis:
The treatment for halitosis will depend on the cause. In many cases, a complete dental cleaning by our hygienist at Elegance Dental may be enough. A deep cleaning, known as scaling and planing, is the most common treatment. During this procedure, the doctor will remove any plaque that has accumulated below the gum line and carefully smooth out the rough areas on the dental roots. After the dentist has addressed the underlying causes of your bad breath, at Elegance Dental, we always recommend you practice good dental hygiene by brushing your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily and use an antibacterial mouthwash.
