Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Onlays

Our office, at Elegance Dental located in Southington, Connecticut, provides our patients with treatments that address larger cavities or tooth damage. We use inlays and onlays as an indirect dental restoration custom-made to match your tooth color for a more natural looking result.

Dental Inlays vs. Onlays

A traditional filling is used when a tooth has minor decay or damage. Dental Inlays are a porcelain restoration that lies inside the cusps of a tooth. It can be used to address decay. Onlays are similar to inlays, but instead, they are used when the decay or damage spreads beyond the cusps of the tooth and requires coverage of one or more cusps or full coverage of the biting surface. Both treatments provide strength and durability when compared to a traditional filling.

Inlays

In our Elegance Dental office, we use the latest technology to make it possible for our patients to maintain an amazing smile even when they have cavities. This procedure will usually take two visits. On the first visit, the dentist will begin by removing the decayed portion of the tooth or teeth receiving the dental inlays. Then the doctor will create an impression of your tooth/teeth and send it to our experienced lab technician. The lab will create your dental inlay using the exact specifications of the tooth that needs restoration, which will be provided by the doctor. Then a temporary inlay is placed until the permanent one is received. The temporary protects your teeth and allows you to chew safely and comfortably. Once your inlays arrive at our Elegance Dental facility, the doctor will ensure they fit correctly and then secure them in place. The restoration is considered an inlay when the material is bonded within the center of a tooth.

Onlays

At Elegance Dental in Haltom City, we use another restoration process called an onlay. This procedure offers the patient a better fitting and stronger repair for decay or other structural damage. Similar to inlays, during your first visit, the dentist will take a molded impression of the teeth that require restoration. The mold is then forwarded to the lab where the onlays will be created. The dentist will place temporary onlays to protect your teeth until the permanent ones arrive. At your second visit, the doctor removes the temporary onlay and replaces it with your permanent one. The dentist will then check your bite to confirm your new onlays fit perfectly. Finally, the dentists will bond the dental onlays onto your teeth and polish the margins.
